Big News!!! The Midget team wins the OMHA Championship!!!
Submitted By Paul Burnett on Friday, March 23, 2018
The Midget team had a hard fought series against Whitby Wildcats to qualify to
go to the OMHA Championship weekend. The
team`s speed, hard work and good goaltending permitted the group to fight
through some injuries, suspensions and penalty problems to be victorious over
Whitby.
In the OMHA Championship weekend, the team was still battling
suspensions, injuries and penalty problems during the round robin.
- The team bent, but did not break in games versus Markham and Niagara, tying both teams. The group continued to battle during these games while having a number of scoring opportunities but the puck was not bouncing their way.
- In the next two games, the team experienced close, hard fought games. The boys’ discipline and dedication to playing good defensive hockey showed through in one goal victories over Oakville and Whitby.
The result of the round robin play was that the Raiders finished first earning the right to play in the Championship Gold medal game. Whitby had a terrific tourney ending in second place. The Raiders and Wildcats had become very familiar with each other playing four games against each other in the previous couple of weeks.
In the Championship game the Raiders were working on all cylinders moving out to a 5-1 lead after the second period. Then there were some tense moments in the third period when Whitby scored two quick goals but the Raiders held on for a five to three victory.
Congrats to Jacob Winterton on winning MVP for the tourney!!!!
Congrats to the coaching staff and the boys, but they are not done yet, moving to the OHF Championship in Ottawa (first game Easter Monday) , one step closer to the TELUS Cup …. GO Raiders Go!!!
